Why screen a healthy child's heart?
Around 600 young people a year die in the UK from heart conditions that were never diagnosed. Most were fit and active. Many were athletes. Exercise does not cause these conditions — but for a young person who has one, hard training and competition are the moments of greatest risk. That is why every elite sporting body screens its young players. Screening is how the conditions are found in time.

Screening is detection, not a guarantee: no test finds every condition, and some develop with age. That is why the international standard is a repeat check every two to four years through the teenage years — and why we build it into your child's plan.

A single-visit cardiac screen for young athletes, built to the standard used in elite sport. The core screen is painless and needle-free — no injections, no radiation, no blood tests required.
Before the visit
You and your child complete a short questionnaire covering symptoms during or after exercise — chest pain, fainting, breathlessness, palpitations — any family history of heart disease or unexplained early death, your child's sport, training load and competition history, and a medical, medication and allergy review.
Consultation & examination
A consultant-led consultation with a parent present throughout, including a full cardiovascular examination, height, weight and blood pressure, and oxygen saturation.
Cardiac investigations
A resting 12-lead ECG using an advanced Philips AI-assisted system, interpreted to the International Criteria for athletes, plus a transthoracic echocardiogram — an ultrasound scan of the heart's structure and function. The core screen is painless and needle-free: no injections, no radiation and no blood tests required.
Results & report
Results are explained to you and your child in person, with a comprehensive written report for parents, a copy for your GP, club or school medical officer on request, and clear guidance on training and competing.
Ongoing care
Referral for further cardiac investigation — such as an exercise ECG — where indicated, with continuity from our team; a repeat-screening plan in line with international guidance; and emergency-planning and defibrillator guidance for your child's club.
What to expect on the day
Your child's visit
01
Welcome & history
You and your child meet the consultant together. We go through the questionnaire, family history, growth history and your child's sport.
02
Growth & body composition
Height, weight and BMI plotted on UK–WHO growth charts, and an InBody scan of muscle and body fat — interpreted for age and stage of growth.
03
The heart screen
Small stickers on the chest record the heart's rhythm; an ultrasound probe shows its structure on screen. Painless, and your child can watch.
04
Results & the plan
The consultant explains what we found and your child's personalised nutrition and growth plan. A written report follows.
If something is found
Most findings are benign features of an athletic heart and need nothing more than a note in the report. Where a condition is identified, the consultant explains it clearly, arranges any further tests or specialist referral, and gives practical guidance on training while it is investigated. Most conditions found at screening are treatable — and most young athletes return to their sport.
Time: allow around 90 minutes for the full visit.
Parents: you are welcome to stay with your child throughout.
Results: explained in person, with a written report to follow.

Growing athletes have different needs from adults. Alongside the heart screen, we assess your child's growth and body composition and build a food-first, sport-specific nutrition plan around healthy development.
Growth & puberty
Height, weight and BMI plotted on age-appropriate UK–WHO growth charts, assessment of pubertal development, investigation of short stature and growth concerns, and paediatric endocrinology referral where indicated.
Muscle & body composition
An InBody body-composition assessment measuring muscle mass and body-fat percentage, interpreted for your child's age and stage of growth, with age-appropriate targets for their sport.
Sport-specific nutrition
A personalised plan for muscle development, strength, endurance and recovery — everyday meals, fuelling before and after training, hydration and sleep, and nutritional support during injury recovery. Energy for growth comes first: performance is never at the cost of healthy development.
Food first
Age-appropriate supplements are considered only where needed, with targeted blood tests for suspected vitamin and mineral deficiencies and gut-health advice, including probiotics where appropriate.
The consultant difference
More than sports nutrition — consultant-led medical care for the growing athlete. Heart, growth and nutrition are assessed together, with specialist referral where needed.

Taylor Grey brings that standard to any child who plays sport. The clinic is led by Dr Moataz Amer, Consultant Paediatrician, and our team includes a consultant sports cardiologist with first-hand experience of screening young athletes at one of Europe’s leading football clubs.

Why does a healthy, sporty child need a heart screen?
Around 600 young people a year die in the UK from heart conditions that were never diagnosed. Most were fit and active, and many were athletes. Exercise does not cause these conditions — but for a young person who has one, hard training and competition are the moments of greatest risk. That is why every elite sporting body screens its young players: screening is how the conditions are found in time.
What does the heart screen involve? Is it painful?
A consultant-led consultation and cardiovascular examination, a resting 12-lead ECG interpreted to the International Criteria for athletes, and a transthoracic echocardiogram — an ultrasound scan of the heart. The core screen is completely painless and needle-free: no injections, no radiation and no blood tests required.
How long does the visit take? Can I stay with my child?
Allow around 90 minutes for the full visit. Parents are welcome to stay with their child throughout, and results are explained in person with a written report to follow.
What happens if something is found?
Most findings are benign features of an athletic heart and need nothing more than a note in the report. Where a condition is identified, the consultant explains it clearly, arranges any further tests or specialist referral, and gives practical guidance on training while it is investigated. Most conditions found at screening are treatable — and most young athletes return to their sport.
Does screening guarantee my child is safe?
No — screening is detection, not a guarantee. No test finds every condition, and some develop with age. That is why the international standard is a repeat check every two to four years through the teenage years, and why we build repeat screening into your child's plan.
Do we need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with us. Where further specialist input is needed after the screen, we arrange the referral for you with continuity from our team.
Can you share the results with my child's club or school?
Yes. Alongside the written report for parents, we provide a copy for your GP, club or school medical officer on request, with clear guidance on training and competing.
